  • The cardiovascular system is one of the major body systems that makes sure that the muscles and bones are supplied with the proper amount of oxygen and blood.
  • Cardiovascular system is one of the anatomic "apparati" (singular "apparatus") in which the body is functionally divided. It is made of the heart and blood vessels (arteries, veins and microcirculation). The heart is a muscle, placed in mediastinum (an anatomic cavity within the chest); its function, absolutely necessary for life, is pumping blood throughout all body vessels, even against gravity, in order to allow the normal gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxyde in every body district. Blood vessels are structures similar to pipes, in which blood constantly flows. Arteries transport oxygenated blood (bright red) from lungs to tissues, and are very elastic and resilient; veins transport a share of blood rich in carbon dioxyde (dark red, almost blue) from tissues to lungs, where it will be oxygenated. Veins posses valves that impedes blood falling when it tries to rise against gravity, but are more rigid and frails. In most body district, veins are more superficial (and can be visible to the naked eye, below the skin), whereas arteries run deeper into the body. Finally, microcirculation is made of very thin capillary vessels, that spread very finely into tissues and organs; it's in these kind of vessels that the gas exchange occurs.
  • We can divide cardiovascular system in two main circulations: the small circulation (from heart to lungs to heart again) and the great circulation (from heart to all body tissues to heart again); the first has the task to oxygenate venous blood, that returns to the heart, whereas the second leads this oxygenate blood through arteries to all body tissues, in order to spread oxygen to every part of the body. Small and great circulation depend on one another, and both start from heart.
  • Is an organ system that moves nutrients, gases, and other things to go in and out.
