Much of it is different variations of a sub Arctic climate. On the North Slope you can find an Arctic climate, while coastal and Southeastern Alaska has a mid-latitude oceanic climate.
It can get quite hot in the interior in the summer (into the 80's and even 90's) and extremely cold in winter in the same place (below zero for weeks at a time). The southern and southeast coast is much milder, with temperatures warm enough for rain along with snow in the winter. It is also very wet in these locations, with some places receiving more than 100 inches of precipitation annually. On the North Slope, it is cold essentially all year, including extreme cold and wind in the winter. Snow is most abundant around south-central Alaska, averaging over 100 inches despite being warmer. There's about 30 - 60 inches through western and central Alaska, with even a bit less in the extreme north where it is so dry.
Alaska has a medial climate with most temperatures ranging in the low 50's to the mid to high 60's. In winter, despite popular belief, the weather is not very cold and is usually warmer than most cities in main land America.
Barrow has a polar climate so weather is extremely dangerous because of the combination of cold and wind, while summers are cool even at their warmest. Despite this, temperatures are moderated by the surrounding topography. Barrow experiences the lowest temperatures statewide during cold waves, extremely low wind chill and white out conditions from blowing snow are very common. Temperatures remain below freezing from early October through late May. Barrow has a desert climate, and averages less than 5 inches of rainfall equivalent per year, given that one inch of rain possesses approximately equal water content to 12 inches of snow. The first snow falls in the first week of October, when temperatures never rise above freezing. The sun sets on November 18 or 19, and it remains below the horizon for about 65 days. In addition to its low temperatures and polar night, Barrow is one of the cloudiest places on Earth. Serious cold weather starts in January and the coldest month is February, averaging -14.2 degrees. By March 1, the sun is up for 9 hours, and temperatures begin to warm, though the winds are higher. April brings less extreme temperatures, with an average of 1.8 degrees and on April 1, the sun is up for more than 14 hours. In May, the temperatures are much warmer, averaging 21.2 degrees. Beginning on May 11 or 12, the sun remains on the horizon thee entire day, and the phenomenon known as the midnight sun is observed. The sun does not set for up to 83 days, until July 31 or August 1. In June, the average temperature rises above freezing, to 35.7 degrees and they stay above freezing until September. July is the warmest month, with highs around 47 and the low around 35. Beginning in late July, the Arctic Ocean remains ice-free until late October. The highest temperature was 79 on July 13, 1993, while the lowest is -56 on February 3, 1924. Even in July and August, it falls below freezing 24 months of the year.
