Probably much the same as it was in the ancient world and still is today.

The word itself originated from the Greek Theatre where actors would put on a mask to typify particular characters they were portraying. People knew this was not the real person but the character.

In a similar way The Bible talks about people pretending to be someone they are not and warns against this. Jesus reserved some of His harshest words for the religious hypocrites of His day.

Unfortunately, the Bible is written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek and the English term "joy" never appears in it. Depending on your translation, "joy" is inserted in numerous places in attempts to best convey the meaning of these terms to the readers.

Modern evangelicals tend to use the term "joy" in the sense of positive feelings greater and more "holy" than happiness, typically with strong overtones regarding surrender to the will of God or allowing oneself to enjoy God more fully.

The Bible's "wisdom" has to do with "depth of understanding"... whether it's "deep or shallow" -- "carnal or spiritual."

Paul tells us that "wisdom" has a dual nature:

"...Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the

Wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe." (I Cor.1:20-21 NIV)

"Wisdom": "sophia" -- "wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual): KJV--wisdom." (Strong's Definitions)

The "wisdom of this world" [worldly wisdom] cannot perceive the Truth of God [God's Wisdom]. It's a "spiritual wisdom" unattainable by the finite "carnal mind;" unless God opens one's spirit to it.

"Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptues." (Luke 24:45)

The Bible is not a dictionary; but it does tell us about Freedom. It's really not a 1-sentence answer; but has to do with understanding a Bible 'CONCEPT.'

There is no such thing as 'absolute freedom' (except for the Creator himself.)

There are many laws to which earthly creatures are bound by: Physical laws (like: gravity; the need to eat food; the need to drink water; the need to sleep) Mankind does not have 'freedom' from these laws. (If we don't drink water, or eat food, there will be consequences.)

There are also 'moral' laws. (like: obedience to our Maker and his requirements). Mankind was not granted 'freedom' to violate God's laws. There would be consequences.

(Free will, and freedom are different)

In the Garden of Eden, the human family had 'freedom'. Freedom from death; from disease and sickness; freedom from 'evil doers'. This was true freedom from God for his human family.

When the first humans sinned against God, they lost such freedom for themselves and any offspring still in their loins. Sin entered the human family. Basically they sold their future generations into 'slavery'. Slavery to sin and death.

Christ Jesus came to earth to 'purchase' us from such slavery. He made it possible for obedient mankind to be 'adopted' as sons of God again. He paid the price, called a 'ransom'.

He 'bought' back what mankind lost. Mankind lost everlasting life on earth, not heaven. Mankind lost perfection. Mankind lost 'freedom' from the terrible consequences of sin. Christ Jesus paid the price to purchase such things back for us.

In Galatians 5:22-23 is a list of the fruit of the Spirit. In verse 23 in the KJV the word used is "temperance". In the NKJV the word has been changed to "self-control"

This refers to restraining passions and appetites.
