In length, the aorta exits the top of your heart, arches around the heart to your left, curves back toward your spine and runs the length of your abdomen until it has to branch into two arteries to feed the legs. In diameter, in the adult, the aorta is about 2.5 cm (an inch) narrowing as various branches take their share to about 1.5 cm or less in your abdomen. This all varies slightly from person to person; larger people have larger aortas.
