NIS (Network Information Service) provides a few information about the users of an UNIX system like uid, gid and so on. The structure of the NIS database is flat and does not allow customization nor expansion. It is considered not really secure and there are not too many administrastion tools: the administration is made through a text editor, editing the file containing all your user information. LDAP is extremely flexible, scalable and has been improved much in the last years. You can find many administration tools and can be made rather secure.

NIS (Network Information Service) is a system developed by Sun Microsystems for sharing system configuration data like user credentials across a network. LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a protocol used for accessing and maintaining distributed directory information services over a network. While NIS is more focused on system configuration information, LDAP is more versatile and can be used for a wider range of directory services beyond user authentication.

What advantage does NIS provide when you use it with NFS?

NIS allows you to create an account with username and password information so users on your server have to authenticate with credentials before being permitted to use shared resources. However it does not allow you to encrypt data so it is not a security-permanent solution. LDAP supports encryption and should be used instead.
