A laptop is generally a cheaper alternative to a Macbook. As far as functionality goes, a laptop will fulfill all your daily needs of Surfing the web, downloading, watching movies, sharing and editing photos et al. But all of this will be a regular experience for most of the Windows users. If you're looking for something which does everything mentioned above with a touch of style or in a graphically appealing manner then you can look towards a MacBook. Apple products are like a woman in stilettos and stockings. They appeal to your senses. You buy Apple products more for their sleek looks and snob value. Though on the expensive side they are definitely good quality. Reliable, relatively virus free, long lasting with better battery life than regular laptops and good to use. Laptops with Windows software are like a strict teacher with a stick in hand. They will teach you the basics of computing and provide a utility friendly experience to you. Windows is usually known to freeze and get infected with viruses but you have anti virus softwares for that in the market. If you're a first time laptop buyer and want to buy it for practical purposes, are under a budget and are not in need of a 'sensual' experience then you must go for a laptop. If, however you have money to spare and want a new, appealing user interface and experience, are concerned with looks and travel a lot and thus require long lasting battery then you may go for a MacBook. Though these days MacBooks are coming with integrated battery so they're not user replaceable.
A Macbook is what Apple calls the "civilian" version of their laptops, because it is best for you if you like to do basic functions on a computer (surf the web, load pictures, save videos, etc).
A Macbook Pro is their most powerful notebooks yet. Apple intends these computers to have powerful capabilities, with many more applications, storage, speed, etc. These computers are best for graphics design, video editing & compressing, music creating & editing, etc.
If you aren't doing anything like editing or compressing, I wouldn't recommend the Macbook Pro. But, if you don't mind adding a few hundred dollars to your budget over a Macbook, I would go with the Macbook Pro.

One difference between an Apple MacBook and an Apple MacBook Pro is the way they look. The MacBook Pro is more sleek looking than the basic MacBook. Most MacBooks have plastic cases, while Pros are only available with aluminum casing.
The MacBook Pro is, of course, much more powerful than the basic MacBook. If you are looking for a really powerful notebook with incredible processing speed, the Pro is the way to go. If you are looking for a notebook for more general use, a basic MacBook is sufficient.
