This from the "Induction motor" article in Wikipedia: "In principle, any AC electrical generator can be called an alternator." The only difference between an AC motor and an AC generator is whether one has electrical energy put in to get mechanical energy out, or whether one has mechanical energy put in to get electrical energy out. That means the answer to your question is basically, "There is no physical difference between an AC motor and an alternator." The unit in question can be used in either way, and assumes a name based on which way it is used.

∙ 12y agoAn AC motor has an electrical input and produces a mechanical torque on a shaft that can then be used to turn an AC (alternating current) generator to produce an AC voltage output.
A diesel or a gas engine can also be used to turn the shaft of an AC generator to produce an AC voltage output. Cars and other vehicles use that system: the AC generator is called by its other name - an "alternator" - and its AC output current is sent through some diodes to produce DC (direct current) to charge the vehicle's battery. (Which supplies power to its engine's starter motor, its fuel pumps, its lights, etc.).

Inputing AC voltage activates both the rotor and stator, in order to give motion.
They will not work in reverse as a generator, because of the lack of an excitation current.
An AC generator, although similar looking and having the same components, needs DC excitation of the rotor to give the magnetic field which is rotated inside the stator.
Another, more fundamental difference: A motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy whereas a generator uses mechanical energy to produce electricity.
