Answer: In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. In addition, certain technologies are controversial such as medical stem cell research. But on the positive side, technology generally creates an "added value" to our lives. What I do sometimes is think about my great-grandmother who was in her 20's around 1880 and wonder what her reaction would be like if I could somehow transport her to 2009. She would be facing a world with very little resemblance to that of the 1880's. Automotive: Even cars, which we take for granted, would be foreign to her. Air travel: Air & jet planes would be foreign to her. Space travel: Landing a man on the moon would be foreign to her. Refrigeration: Air conditioning & refrigerators would be foreign to her. Electronic media: Radio, TV, DVD players, etc. would be foreign to her. Computers: Small home-based PCs would be foreign to her. Medicine: Today, there are cures and/re maintenance procedures for diseases (such as Polio) that in her day, would lead to a lifelong disability. The list goes on and on. My conclusion to your question on technology is that technology, if used properly, provides us at the very least, with convenience and at the other end of the spectrum, a better quality of life.
