Many people interpret the song as being about someone rescued from attempting suicide. The narrator finds himself in the hospital and imagines he has been abuducted by aliens after trying to kill himself, possibly using drugs.

Clues include the medical imagery and the lyrics "You know that I was hoping / That I could leave this star-crossed world behind."

The narrator finds himself "back at home," glad he didn't die ("I'm looking forward to this life I live"), but knowing that the feelings and impulses which led him to make an attempt on his life in the first place are still there ("And you know I'm fine / But I hear those voices at night / Sometimes / That justify my claims"). He advises others like him "You think you might cross over / You're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea / You better look it over / Before you make that leap."

Having said that, it could be a narrative of an a persons' belief that they have been the victim of an alien abduction in itself; "back home" meaning returned to wherever after an abduction, and the other metaphors, if you want to call them that, can actually be connected to the feelings that many, if not most, supposed alien abductees report. Who knows? "the devil and the deep blue sea" for instance can be translated into the hopelessness that these people feel or that anyone would feel in such a circumstance- facing up to what is to them the reality of contact with nonhuman intelligences but not being able to tell anyone for fear of ridicule or accusations of lying or displaying some sort of psychosis. Similar interpretations can be made to most, if not every, line of this song. Maybe B Flowers is just singing about his own observations of abductees, or maybe he is one! Once again, who knows? I'll ask him next time i see him.
