The life cycle of a fish starts with an egg, which generally hatches to produce a larva that gets nutrition from a yolk sac on its body. When the yolk sac is depleted, the larva becomes a fry and starts finding its own food. The fry later grows into a juvenile, and then into an adult. However, not all fish go through all the stages.

  1. SpawningEgg Stage
  2. The swordfish's spawning season varies. Warmer waters such as the Florida coast and the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas support a year-round spawning season. In cooler waters, spawning tends to be restricted to spring and summer. Larval Stage
  3. Estimates of how many eggs the female carries usually begin at one million, with some estimates reaching as much as hundreds of millions. After external fertilization by males, the eggs live near the surface of the water, kept buoyant by a droplet of oil. Spawning may occur more than once per season. Full Growth
  4. Embryonic development happens with two to three days. At hatching, larvae are usually around 4 mm (less than a quarter of an inch). Larval and young swordfish feed on zooplankton and fish larvae. Feeding
  5. The swordfish reaches full growth with both dorsal fins by about 60 inches. Swordfish may reach three feet within their first year; after about two years, females begin to outgrow males, and typically remain larger. Estimates of sexual maturity range anywhere from two to six years. The majority of swordfish caught for food are juveniles that have not yet reached sexual maturity.
  6. Swordfish feed mostly on other fish and cephalopods such as squid, octopus and cuttlefish. Depending on the size of the prey, the swordfish may or may not use its distinctive feature to capture its meal.

The life cycle of a swordfish begins as an egg that is laid and is fertilized. The eggs hatch and the hatch-lings are called larvae. When the female is 5-6 years old they will begin laying their own eggs and the male fertilize the eggs. They can live to be 9 years.
