My niece had died from this. she was only 4 months old at the time. she would have been a year old this past September. I've heard that recently that most children will not live after the age 30 but some may and if they do then they are very lucky

I have a student with schizencephaly. I need to know what else, if anything, can be done to help him. He is ten years old. What is his life expectancy? If we keep working with him, will we see progress? Right now with testing scores, he is not advancing at all. He is regressing.

If hydrocephalus is treated successfully, and there are no further complications, then having hydrocephalus will not affect life expectancy.

There are always risks connected to surgery, infection being the greatest risk.

I have read a lot about hydrocephalus, and have never found any statistics for the survival rate for people hydrocephalus. The books, and articles, give the reason that the statistics are highly varied depending on the causes, the time between the appearance and the treatment, the frequency of complications, etc.

We will all die eventually, whether or not we have hydrocephalus. With treatment, people with hydrocephalus can go on to live normal lives. That's not to say you won't have shunt failures and setbacks. Keep a positive attitude and find a great neurosurgeon.

What is the difference between viral and genetic hydrocephalus?

I have hydrocephalus and its not "viral" hydrocephalus, its congenital (i believe that's how its spelled.) anyways congenital hydrocephalus is present or detected at birth without it being in your ancestry. Genetic hydrocephalus means it was passed on from a generation or family member before you.
