Spartan boys were sent off to military school at the age of 7. This upbringing was called agoge. They were separated into age groups and lived with that group in military barracks. This lifestyle continued until the age of 20, after which they joined the older men in the military.

There were Spartans, perioci and heliots (the slaves). Spartans were mostly men, as men were full citizens and held all the power. Sparta was a military city, and mostly produced and trained armies/soldiers. Babies were checked to see if they were healthy. If they were not, they would be left to die. If they were, they would be accepted into the community immediately, regardless of sex. Boys would be sent to military training camp at 7. It was very harsh and painful. They were encouraged to steal, but if they were caught, they were given severe beatings. At the age of 18, they would be given a very hard physical test. If they passed, they would be admitted into the army and live in the army barracks, until the age of 60 when they would retire and live with their family. These make up the Spartans. However, if they failed, they would be Perioci, which means they could have land, own slaves but no political power. Woman were sent to school, but no one knows if they were as harsh as the boys'. There they would learn gymnastics, sports, reading and writing. Woman were in general very free because their husbands were never at home. Heliots were owned by Spartan and Perioci men when a new city or town was conquered. The person in charge of that place would own all the people there. The people who are military leaders in the conquered place would be in a higher rank then Heliots, but still slaves.
