A member of the Illuminati was called an Illuminati or Illuminatus. The word itself is Latin and translates as "Enlightened Ones".

The Illuminati, however, are not and never have been a "sect". They began as an agnostic society, primarily composed of wealthy scholars, merchants, land-owners, crusaders and knights who fought to wrest control of the holy land from the moors. When they ultimately failed and were routed, some formed what became known as the Knights Templar, which later became more widely associated with arcane and occult practices.

The Illuminati broke up ca. 1785, and now only exist in the imagination of conspiracy theory buffs. Certain popular works of fiction that link the Illuminati with "the new world order" cause confusion among those who do not understand that the Illuminati are no more.
