Charon, also known as Pluto I, is the largest of the five known natural satellites of the dwarf planet Pluto. It was discovered in 1978 at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., using photographic plates taken at the United States Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station. With half the diameter and one eighth the mass of Pluto, it is a very large moon in comparison to its parent body. Its gravitational influence is such that the barycenter of the Pluto-Charon system lies outside Pluto. In September 2016, astronomers announced that the reddish-brown cap of the north pole of Charon is composed of tholins, organic macromolecules that may be essential ingredients of life, and produced from methane, nitrogen and related gases released from the atmosphere of Pluto and transferred over about 19,000 km distance to the orbiting moon. The New Horizons spacecraft is the only probe that has visited the Pluto system. It approached Charon to within 27,000 km in 2015.

We don't know. It is possible that Pluto and Charon are captured asteroids.

Why does one side of pluto always face charon?

Pluto is tidally locked to Charon. When the Pluto-Charon system first formed Pluto's rotation was probably faster, but was slowed by the effects of Charon's gravity.

Is Pluto bigger than its moons?

Yes it is. However, its largest moon, Charon, is so large that one can almost think of Pluto and Charon as being a double minor planet system as Charon does not orbit Pluto as much as Pluto and Charon both orbiting a common point near Pluto, because of the effect of both Pluto's gravity on Charon as well as Charon's gravitational pull on Pluto.

What is the planet with Charon as a moon?

Charon is a natural satellite of Pluto, but Pluto is a planetesimal, not a planet.

Is Pluto's moons bigger that it?

No. If Charon, Pluto's largest moon, were bigger, then Pluto would be the moon. Charon is abould half the diameter of Pluto.

Is Pluto orbited by charon?

Yes it is orbited by Charon

Is Pluto larger than earth's moon?

Pluto has five satellites(moon) which are Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra out of which Charon is the Biggest. However, It is approximately half of pluto. If the Charon was bigger than pluto, We would probably be seeing pluto rotating around Charon. This is because,Charon would have more gravitional force than that of pluto as Its size would be bigger. Simply put, Bigger things dont revolve around smaller things. So, Pluto's moons are not bigger than Pluto.

Why do astronomers think that charon is another planet?

They don't. Charon is generally considered a moon of Pluto, however, since Charon and Pluto orbit a center of mass that is outside of Pluto some have suggested calling the Pluto-Charon system a binary or double planet.

What are the number of satellite of planet Pluto?

Yes, there is a satellite that orbits around Pluto its name is Charon. Charon is half the size of Pluto, with a diameter of 1200km. Pluto and Charon orbit each other like double planets.

What is charon in the solar system?

Charon is the largest moon of Pluto, a dwarf planet that was once considered a planet. Charon is so massive compared to Pluto that rather than Charon orbiting Pluto, the two objects orbit a common center of mass. This leads some to called Pluto-Charon a binary planetary system.

Why do some scientists think that Charon isn't a moon of Pluto?

Charon does not truly orbit Pluto. Rather, Charon's gravity moves Pluto enough that both objects orbit around their common center of mass, which is outside of Pluto. This led to suggestions that the Pluto-Charon system be classified as a binary or double planet.

Do Pluto and Charon have gaseous surfaces?

No. The planet Pluto is a solid dwarf planet. The moon Charon is a solid moon.
