This is of Arabic origin, derived from the first part of the naval title Amir al-Bahr meaning 'commander of the sea'. This was picked up Mediaeval Europeans (Crusaders and others) who coined the shorter terms Amiral (in old French) and Admiralis (Mediaeval Latin).

The word 'admire' comes to English from the Latin 'admirari' (ad, plus mirari - to wonder at, from mirus, astonishing).

It's first recorded in English in 1560.
