Sophie Sheridan is 20 years old and is due to get married to fiancé Sky, after clearing out some old trunks she finds her Mother's old diary the year she kept when she was expecting Sophie, which reveals she has three possible Fathers, and decides to invite them all to her wedding, feeling she needs to find out who her Father is to discover who she is.

When Ali and Lisa, Sophie's best friends, arrive on the island for her wedding she informs them of her Mother's secret and they are shocked to find out that she has invited them all to her wedding, when Sophie warns them that no-one else knows so they have to keep quiet about it.

Donna Sheridan, Sophie's Mother is a 40- something year old hippy hotel owner, who has raised Sophie on her own from birth after her own Mother told her 'not to bother coming back' when she told her she was pregnant. She works hard yet does not often have the money to show for it. Her two best friends Rosie and Tanya also arrive for Sophie's wedding. Donna, Tanya and Rosie were once in a band called 'Donna and the Dynamo's'. Donna wants her daughter to be happy but is unsure of her daughter getting married so young in fear of Sophie ending up just like her.

When the three men arrive on the island, Sam Carmichael, Bill Anderson and Harry Bright, they are unawares that Sophie is the one who invited them as Sophie wrote the letter in her Mother's name, Sophie finds them quickly and is a little worried that she cannot tell who is her Father by just looking at him and tries to hide them in the Old Goathouse, eventually admitting that she was the one who sent the letters and that her Mother had no idea that they were there. After all of them eventually agree to stay for the wedding Donna walks into the lower floor of the goathouse and hears a creak from the floorboards. As she goes up to the upper floor she tried to push up the door but it is blocked by a chair so she only catches a glimpse of her three past lovers. She climbs on the roof trying to get a better look but then ends up falling through the roof and landing on a mattress, all three men are not aware yet they could be Sophie's Father and they do not know each other were past lovers of Donna's. After she tells them to leave she runs out in tears, quickly comforted by Rosie and Tanya. As the hen night comes Donna Rosie and Tanya bring the band back for one night and perform for Sophie, at which Sam, Bill and Harry crash the party and Donna notices. After running off all the men from the stag party crash the hen party and are dancing. In sequence Sam, Bill and Harry discover that they think they are Sophie's Father but all three are separately sworn to secrecy. After getting overwhelmed Sophie collapses in the centre of the courtyard. The next morning both Donna and Sophie's best friends attempt to drill the men for information as to why they are there. Meanwhile Donna and Sophie argue about the fact Sophie never had a Father which leaves a heartbroken Donna moping around feeling terrible. Harry tries to offer Donna a large sum of money for bringing Sophie up on her own, and Sam tries to talk to Donna about it but she won't listen. Out of the three men Donna was most upset to see Sam as he was the one she truly fell in love with and he left her to get married in New York. Sophie tries to make up with Donna by letting her help get her ready in which Donna reminisces all the memories they had together. As they go up to the Church Sam tries to talk to Donna again but she still won't listen and runs away from him. Donna walks Sophie down the aisle and gives her to Sky and after sitting down, Donna realises she has to face her past and admits Sophie's Father is here, after Sophie admits she wrote to them all three men stand up, quickly realising that all three of them are potential Fathers, both Donna and Sophie forgive each other and eventually the men settle on all of them being Sophie's Father and Sophie is happy. She suddenly realises that she doesn't need to know who her Father is to get married, and with Sky's wishes they call off the wedding at the last minute to go travel across the world which is what Sky wanted all along, as they are about to make their exit Sam stops the wedding and confesses that after all these years he is still madly in love with Donna and proposes to her, as to which she finally says I do, and they get married, at the reception Sam gives a speech and then Rosie goes after Bill, they all jump up and down dancing until a spring fountain bursts into the centre of the courtyard, the final scene comes when we see Sophie going off to travel around the world with Sky and seeing Donna waving goodbye with Sam. All now happy.
