"The Gamut" is about love. The definition of a gamut is "the entire range or series." The poem opens by telling the day to be soft. Her true love is approaching and everything has to be perfect for him. She also tells the sun to look bright for her love. She asks the wind not to blow and the birds not to sing because his voice is the only sound she wants to hear. She then goes on to call upon death because she doesn't want to live without him. This poem runs the gamut of her life with him; from the time they me, when she asks the day to be soft, until he leaves her, at which point she calls for death to come for her.
