The purpose of putting holes near the top of a metal lampshade is to let the heat from the light bulb escape. Without the holes at the top. The metal shade would become very hot.

∙ 11y agoMost lampshades are made of plastic or cloth. The holes are meant to allow the heat of the light bulb to escape or dissipate, since heat rises. If they were not there, the shade may actually catch fire, if it's a cloth one, or begin to crack prematurely if it is plastic.
