Cordless phones originally operated on 1.9 MHz, then 46-49 MHz, 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and the current technology as of 2o12 is 1.9 GHz. 900 MHz phones were the first to transmit in digital, everything before then was analog only.

It depends on the type of phone, and where you use it. Some phones if they have a clear 'line of sight' between the handset and base can work up to half a mile apart.

A cordles phone's range depends upon the materials that the signal has to travel through between the base station and the actual receiver. If it is solid concrete or brick the range might only be a couple of meters. If it is simply air it could be ten times that distance.
