Screamo
It's possible they just like it. Screamo is actually a derivative of Hardcore Punk, along the lines of Powerviolence, Grindcore, Crust Punk, etc. What's currently dubbed as "Screamo" is a far cry from what it really is.
I guess that depends on your style and inevitably your age. To some people screamo is scary. It takes some getting used to. I started listening to screamo in 7th grade and I was scared of it at first. Then I started listening to the lyrics instead of the screaming. Once you can do that, you can understand screamo music. If you can feel the lyrics, for example Falling Away From Me by Korn, is about suicide and being beaten. If you feel like people are always beating you down you wouldn't be scared of that song. It all depends on the lyrics once you get past the screamo part of it.

Screamo so popular because its awesome and shows real feelings about things. Some people related to screamo a lot more rather than other genres of music. Screamo can indeed be extremely emotional at times, and have a lot of heartfelt lyrics that makes people want to continue to listen to the music.
