The state is almost entirely located within The Great Basin, a desert area that encompasses six states. The southern third of the state (the area north of Las Vegas where Area 51 is located) is situated within the Mojave Desert. Nevada is one of the driest states in the US.
Area 51 is in reality Nellis Air Force Base and its surrounding area, a top secret government installation used for testing new and secret aircraft. The area was selected for this purpose because it has year round ideal flying conditions and a sparsely populated desert area and mountains.
