"The Humming-Bird Tree" (1969) is about a wealthy white boy named Alan, who lives in Trinidad. His parents do not want him to play with his Negro friends Jaillin and Kaiser, or have anything to do with them.

In the future, as he grew up, he began to see his friends as vulgar and misbehaving. Although he still loved Jaillin, he couldn't see himself with her.
