Spires served multiple purposes. For one, it made the buildings stand out as being significant. Second, it was often viewed as a channel by which prayers and offerings reached the Gods and conversely, the power of the Gods would be pass back down to man. The spire can also be symbolically significant to specific religions, who have different interpretations of it.
Many Christian churchs of different demoninations have a spire or a steeple on the top of their church.
