I can only report what I've read elsewhere (I don't claim to have any "inside info" on this). It is the story of the tensions in and subsequent break-up of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, very creatively told as a sort of Sam Peckinpah Western movie. Eli is Stills; the Duke is Nash; Young Billy is Young, and Fat Albert is Crosby. The "Indian girl", Raven, is Rita Coolidge, who had a relationship with Stills and then left him for Nash. Of course, as usual the girl gets the blame for breaking up the band.
Despite that cliche I love this brilliant album - really captures that late 60s - early 70s vibe.
