Just as the experiences of earning a GED and a high school diploma differ, so do the actual outcomes of having either degree. Earning a GED or a high school diploma is a great… feat, but here are some differences to consider while you choose the path that's right for you:Students may experience many opportunities in high school, including the social benefits of being able to make friends and forming connections that could lead to profitable relationships. High school students may also gain more valuable insights by learning material gradually over four years, rather than by studying for a one-time exam. On the other hand, attending high school for such a long period of time can have negative side effects on the student. Some argue traditional schools stifle creativity and innovation, and contribute to information overload. In addition, self-studying for the GED may lessen the social blows some students face in school during the trying teenage years, such as bullying. GED students can also form friendships through GED study groups or other community groups, and therefore can still access many of the same social opportunities as traditional high school students.Since the GED tests include subject areas based on foundational fields like science, social studies, math, reading, and writing, many believe GED students receive the equivalent education of a traditional high school student. However, high school students are traditionally introduced to a broader array of topics than GED students. High school students could be exposed to diverse AP courses that GED classes never touch on, such as economics, psychology, or an advanced language course or topic seminar. Even though the GED tests on several different subjects, high school classes can cover more topics than those to which GED students are typically exposed.GEDs are becoming more and more accepted when applying to American colleges and universities. According to the American Council on Education, about 95 percent of American colleges and universities now accept GED tests instead of a high school diploma as a basic academic requirement to be fulfilled before matriculation. However, things can become tricky if you decide to attend college abroad. Even though American colleges typically accept GED tests in lieu of a high school diploma, some European colleges do not have this policy. If you decide that attending college abroad is important to you, it would be wise to research whether certain schools will accept the GED instead of an American high school diploma. Most high schools take four full years to complete. However, some students are able to pass the GED exam after only studying for several months. The GED exam tests students on five core subject areas within a seven-hour exam. To study for this exam, some students opt to go to GED study groups, while others study on their own or hire private tutors. Some students' parents or family members even tutor them. In order to pass this test, you have to score higher than the 60th percentile of high school graduates - this means students need to perform better on the GED than 60 percent of graduating high school seniors who took that same test. It depends on your test-taking abilities, of course, but most people can study for and pass the GED within a couple of years. Time commitment can be a huge factor, but it is important to keep in mind the other opportunities and experiences that could be lost without experiencing everything high school has to offer. (MORE)
For many college and high school students, final exams represent the end of both a semester and a class. Unfortunately, studying for these assessments often occurs at the last… possible moment. But why not lessen your likelihood of exhaustion, stress, and low scores by starting your prep now? Here is how you can do so:Before you can begin readying for your final exams, you must understand their content and format. Speak with your instructors at the beginning of the semester to determine what their tests will be like. Different types of assessments will require different forms of prep. You may even discover a course where you have no final exam!If you will be reviewing frequently (and you will be), it is important to select a study space where you are comfortable. Re-organize your bedroom or the family office so that you have a functional workspace. If you do not study well at home, find a local library that offers conference rooms or other ideal spaces for learning your material.Strong note-taking skills can carry you far in the prep process. Begin the school year by taking detailed, accurate notes in every class. Review these notes on a regular basis to reinforce key concepts. Quiz yourself frequently on the information in your notes. When you initially mention the idea of studying for final exams early in the year, you may be met with resistance, but it is all about your ability to sell the idea! Convince your peers that a little work now means more free time later. Your study group can meet as little as once per week to review material and potential test questions. If you begin studying early, you will have ample time to identify those content areas where you struggle. Once you are aware of these weaknesses, you can take positive steps to correct them. Seek assistance from a family member or friend, stay after class, or research online resources - in other words, go the extra mile to excel in your most difficult subjects.Ensure you get plenty of rest the nights before the exam when that date finally approaches. Needless to say, you should be getting that sufficient rest now as well. Additionally, you must eat well not only in the hours before your final exam, but throughout the year. Caffeine and energy drinks are not wise in the long run. Eat leafy greens, grains, peanut butter, nuts, milk, and seafood to make your mind strong and your studying more efficient. If you are low on energy, eat an apple or a banana. While it may feel too early to begin preparing for final exams, you will likely be happy that you did once the test day arrives. Stay organized, optimistic, and energized - and ace those tests! (MORE)
Some students struggle with college from time to time. If it was one's first semester or a result of a personal crisis, bad grades happen. It is possible to bounce back from… a bad semester, improve grades, and return to good academic standing. These tips can help any student looking to improve his or her college performance. The first step in fixing a problem is identifying exactly what went wrong. Why did you have a bad semester? Did you skip class, stay out partying, and fail to study? Were you working too many hours at your job? Did you have personal problems that interfered with your focus and motivation? Did you take too many hours and overschedule yourself? Each of these problems requires a different solution. Take time to identify and list any factors that contributed to your bad semester. Some students simply lack motivation while others are conflicted and trying to do too many things at once. What were your priorities when you had the bad semester? How will you need to change them? If you want to complete your degree, you may need to prioritize school over partying, gaming, television, time with friends, and other social pursuits.Once you have identified problems and clarified your motivations, you will need to begin breaking bad habits. Did you have problems sleeping through class, procrastinating, or partying? Changing old habits isn't easy and may require significant steps such as changing the people you hang out with or seeking professional help if you feel your drinking is out of control. Breaking bad habits may take time, but set goals and look for progress not perfection.Good grades are the result of consistent positive actions throughout the entire semester. Begin my making a commitment to attend every class and do all assignments on time. If you require additional assistance, you may want to commit to attending tutorials, working with the campus tutoring center, visiting with professors during office hours, and forming study groups. Write down your plans and stick to them.Sometime students have a bad semester because small things took over all study time. Time wasters such as social media, forums, video games, and television can go from little distractions to all-consuming activities. If you spent more time procrastinating than you did studying, you may need to eliminate the source. Send the gaming system home, uninstall social media apps from your phone, and resolve not to visit forums or websites until all your assignments are done. All of the above tips are helpful, but sometimes students need to be reminded to act like adults. Few adults have the luxury of wasting an entire semester. If you want to turn around a bad semester at school, start acting like an adult. Keep regular hours. Set goals. Do your work well and on time. Recognize those friends who help you achieve more and avoid those who are getting in your way. In other words, take charge of your own life. Some students forget that college is a choice. If you want to be there, you will take the steps necessary to bounce back from a bad semester. If after identifying the problems and examining your motivation, you are still in doubt about whether college is right for you, consider taking a semester off. Many colleges offer numerous resources to help students succeed. Academic help is available from professors, peer tutoring groups, the writing center, and tutoring center. The health and wellness center may have classes and programs to help with time management, substance abuse, depression, and other habits that keep students from achieving their best. Many programs are offered free or at reduced charge.College is a period of transition and many students struggle to adjust from the structure of high school to the more relaxed environment of college. From time to time even good students can have a bad semester. (MORE)
Are you thinking about getting contact lenses? You are not the only one. According to the American Optometric Association, more than 30 million people in the United States wea…r contact lenses. However, before those 30 million received their contact lens prescription, they had to take a contact lens exam. The exam is necessary in order to provide you with the best type of lenses. After you take the contact lens exam, you'll see the world in a whole different way.A contact lens exam aims to evaluate multiple elements. These include the shape of your eye, your vision correction needs, and how often you will use the lenses. If you've never worn contact lenses, your eye care professional will show you how to use your lenses and take care of them.A contact lens exam is less comprehensive than a regular eye exam. Your eye care professional will probably recommend both exams. An eye exam will allow your eye care professional to determine if you have any eye infections or diseases, some of which you may not even be aware of. A contact lens exam, on the other hand, will only determine which contact lenses are best for you.You will need to schedule an appointment with an eye care professional nearest you. A contact lens exam can be conducted by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Most contact lens examinations are conducted by optometrist who have specialized training to assess how it may impact your eye's health. Ophthalmologists are eye surgeons and rarely fit contact lenses. Both are qualified to conduct eye tests and prescribe lenses. The cost of a contact lens exam will vary depending upon where you live, but generally it costs approximately $100-$200 U.S. dollars. Remember that you may be required to take other vision exams, which will bring additional charges.A contact lens exam is a necessary step in order for you to receive your contact lens prescription. It is generally painless, and it will help you learn how to use your contact lenses and take care of them. There are many eye care professionals that are qualified to give the examination, and the exam itself is relatively inexpensive. After the exam, you'll be on your way to improved vision.Contact lenses are an increasingly popular way for people to improve their vision. The American Optometric Association reports that more than 30 million people use contact lenses. Two thirds of those 30 million are women, and approximately half are 25 to 44-years-old. (MORE)
Many students have been there - preparing for the final semester, week, day of class - only to find out they need to complete another semester. Problems transferring credits, …misunderstandings, and even administrative errors can cause some students to stay in college for an additional semester. While it may seem like the end of the world, there are many positives too. Why not make the most of it? Here are a few tips to help you make the most out of an extra semester:In an attempt to finish school early or efficiently, you may have neglected to take all of the classes you had hoped to fit in. Think of this as your chance to take a course you have always wanted to take. Assuming you only need to take one or two specific classes to fulfill your graduation requirements, you can load up the rest of your semester with subjects you enjoy. Perhaps you've always wanted to try a dance class. Maybe you're interested in horticulture or something more closely related to your major. Either way, you've been given the chance to pursue your passions and try new things! Many students intend to spend a semester abroad but simply run out of time. Depending on the courses required for you to complete your degree, you may be able to study abroad. If you've discovered the need for another semester early on, you may be able to plan classes around the country where you would like to study and the courses available there. You may also be able to take a class online or perform a directed study overseas. Study abroad experiences can help build your resume, build job skills, and overall enhance your study experience. Use your extra semester to see a little bit more of the world while completing your studies. While colleges would love to promise high-paying jobs for every graduate, it isn't a reality for everyone. If you've got a light class load and a bunch of free time, spend it working. You may gain valuable experience that can help pad your resume, while saving extra cash for your uncertain future. This extra money can help in a variety of ways. You may be able to be more selective in your job search or start repaying student loans. Extra money is seldom a bad thing, so save some up this semester! If you've been given the gift of an extra semester, you've been given the gift of time. Often, the final semester students face is filled with a lot of stress due to difficult coursework, tons of classes, or a thesis. All of this leaves very little time for looking for work, the ultimate goal of these years of preparation through education. Take this semester to begin looking for work. Focus on creating a great resume, writing a good cover letter, and finding job descriptions that are in line with the type of work you're hoping to perform. See what's out there and even investigate different cities where you would be willing to transfer. So now you've got a whole semester to make arrangements for your life outside of college. As we've mentioned, you can get a job lined up, but you may also be able to nail down where you're going to live, get a feel for (or even take a trip to) your new city, or look into buying a car. You can make a plan to pay back your student loans and get everything in order to transition yourself from college student to working professional. Ultimately, it comes down to your attitude about your extra semester. While you can't change the fact that you have to complete it, you can begin to view it as some extra time to accomplish your academic, personal, and professional goals. (MORE)
