Traditional Zulu clothing is made out of fibers like straw and cotton as well as animal hides. Zulu women traditionally cover their heads, wearing distinctive straw hats, as a sign of respect. Traditional Zulu clothing is very colorful and almost always incorporates bead work. Some bead work has symbolic meaning within the Zulu culture.

The Zulu names for some items of traditional clothing are:

  • isicholo, a wide straw hat worn by women, especially mature women
  • isidwaba, a pleated cowhide skirt, sometimes decorated with beads
  • uhbulahlu, bead work like headdresses and necklaces
  • amabheshu, a "backward apron" made of animal hide, worn by men.

Anything pretty much goes really. For the younger generation we have the same dress code as in the western and European countries, on the other hand over the years we've picked up clothing from various African countries such as Zambia's (which is a material that has unique artistic designs printed on it) this dress dress code is usually mainly for the adults.

Traditional male clothing is usually light, consisting of a two-part apron (similar to a loincloth) used to cover the genitals and buttocks. Married men will usually also wear a headband, called the umqhele. The women on the other hand dress differently depending on whether they are single, engaged and married. An unmarried woman who is still eligible is proud of her body and is not ashamed of showing it. She only wears a short skirt made of grass or beaded cotton strings and spruces herself up with lots of bead-work. An engaged woman will let her traditionally short hair grow. She will cover her bosom with a decorative cloth which is done out of respect for her future relatives and to indicate that she has been spoken for. The married woman covers her body completely signalling to other men that she is taken.
