Many files online, or files you will download, or even things like tax forms, will frequently be in a format with the initials ".pdf " commonly known as an Adobe Acrobat file. If you have Adobe on your computer, keep it - you'll need it eventually.

Adobe Acrobat Reader (not to be confused with Adobe Acrobat, the primary authoring program) is a program that allows the user to read files that are saved in Adobe's Portable Document File (PDF) format.

In the early days of the web, one of the biggest problems was document compatibility across different platforms and browsers. Adobe solved this problem by creating the PDF format. PDF files can be viewed on any platform that has the reader. PDF files have since grown to the point that they can be digitally signed, and are accepted as legal documents since they can be saved in such a manner as to prevent editing by anyone but the original author.

Unlike Acrobat itself, the reader will only allow you to view a document, not create or edit one. However, beginning with version 9, increased functions for the reader have been added.

The reader is also embedded in virtually all browsers, so that when you click on a PDF file on a site, it automatically opens in your browser, rather than having to save and open it in the program.

Can you print a pdf using adobe reader 9 - I need to print something and it says I need adobe acrobat 4 but I have adobe reader 9 - is that just as good?

Yes, in most cases you can print .PDF files using Adobe Reader 9. Adobe Acrobat 4 is simply the earliest version that you can use to print the .PDF file. Since Adobe Reader 9 was released much later than Acrobat 4, there should be no problem printing that file. If you cannot print the .PDF file it's possible that there is a security restriction on the file that will not allow you to print it. You may need to check the security settings on the file inside the Acrobat Reader application to find out if the security allows printing.

Do you need software to save fillable pdf forms and email it to someone?

The free Adobe Acrobat Reader allows you to view and print fillable PDF forms. It does not allow you to save a form to your PC once you have filled them in. You must have Adobe Acrobat Writer (Acrobat 9 Standard $299) software installed on your computer to save completed PDF forms for future reference or to send as an attachment to an e-mail. An option is to download the free Foxit PDF reader from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/. It will allow you to save your filled out forms. You can also use the previous version of Adobe Reader 8.1.3, but with both Foxit and Adobe Reader version 9, you will have all available options.
