Energy can be manipulated in one of two ways: it can be changed from one form into another or it can be transferred from one place to another.

Work can be defined as the process of changing energy from one form into another. For example, an electric motor does work when it changes electrical energy into kinetic energy.

Heat can be defined as the process of transferring energy from a body at a higher temperature to one at a lower temperature.

So, work and heat both describe energy in transit, and they are both related. For example, an electric kettle performs work when it converts electrical energy into the internal energy of the water/kettle. This brings about an increase in the temperature of the water/kettle, and the temperature difference between the water/kettle and the surrounding atmosphere results in the loss of energy from the water/kettle through heat transfer. So the ACTUAL increase in the water/kettle's internal energy must be the difference between the WORK done on it, and the HEAT transfer away from it.
