Sharia law was introduced as a potential force for good, but has too often been used as a weapon for evil.
A recent example in Malaysia, where sharia operates within a dual system with criminal and civil laws, illustrates this point. A man who raped an under-age twelve year old girl has been allowed to marry her (as a second wife) under sharia law, and all criminal charges have been dropped. The young girl's parents consented to the marriage after payment of compensation and the girl seems to have acquiesced. Under a fairer system, the man would have bee tried, and if convicted, served a long prison sentence, something the Child Rights Coalition Malaysia, called for. Even the Community and Consumer Affairs Minister of Sabah questions the validity of the marriage. Sharia law places women and girls in an inferior position and should not be allowed to override the secular laws.
