The liver is connected to two blood vessels, one called the hepatic artery and the other the portal vein. The portal vein carries nutrients digested from the gastro intestinal track.

The hepatic portal veins transport nutrients to the liver that will be used by the entire body, but the liver's "private" nutrient transport pathway is the hepatic artery. They both supply the liver to some extent, but oxygen is given up mostly by the hepatic artery. A portal circulation is a "pit stop" where oxygen depleted blood flows from large veins into a web of capillaries and then into another large vein. It only happens twice in the human body, once in the brain's pituitary connecting two originally distant tissues that migrated together, then in the liver, where it bridges gut to liver and helps neutralize blood poisons.
