In the Gregorian calendar, each regular year has 365 days and each leap year has 366 days. There are 97 leap years in every 400-year period. the earth actually takes 365.25 days to rotate the sun as it would be very difficult to have a day lasting only 6 hours we have decided to "save" the extra time until it amounts to a full day every 4 years.

A year that has 366 days rather than 365 is called a leap year. A year divisible by 4 (but not by 100) is a leap year. Years divisible by 500 are leap years.
