it all depends on the university that you plan on attending. My best friend if planning on teaching high school math. For that, at my university, you can simply major in math, or you can major in education with concentration in secondary math education. But, she has to take classes like, college trigonometry, pre-calculus, college algebra, statistics, Calculus I,II and III,, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra I and II, Modern Algebra, and Differential Equations to name a few =)

If you plan to teach in the public school system, you must obtain a bachelor's degree in a teacher education program and state teachers certification. This would take approximately four years as a full-time student, provided you take the degree as prescribed by the college or university.

That depends on what kind of license or certification the high school requires a teacher to have,

and what courses the licensing authority requires you to have in order to get the certification or

license. These are different in every state.
