Your question is kind of broad so I'll answer as best I can. The league has 30 teams based in 6 Canadian cities and 24 in the US. There are approximately 700 players in the league at any one time. Each team plays 82 games a season . 16 teams make the playoffs and can play a minimum of 4 games or a maximum of 28 depending on how far they advance and how long each series goes. Like any sports league, the NHL keeps a load of individual and team stats. For a look at these stats go to a good hockey site like that of the Hockey News or the NHL. They always have up-to-date stats on players and teams.
In case this question is about jersey numbers, any number from 1 to 98 is eligible to be worn on an NHL jersey by any player, regardless of position, unless it has been retired by the player's team. 99 was once an active number, but was retired league-wide when Wayne Gretzky retired. 00 and 0 were also once usable numbers, but have not been since 1998. While numbers are not officially assigned to specific positions, certain numbers are often traditionally worn by certain positions - 1 and numbers ending in 0 are often preferred by goalies, for example.

This practise of wearing numbers only was started in the 1994/95 NHL season.
There does not seem to be information on the maximum number of NHL teams in the league. However, the maximum numbers of players on an NHL team is eighty players.
number 4
stats from 02' said that 132 of every 22000 players make it to nhl or nhl feeder team. so with the numbers reduced, 6 of every thousand make it. and out of the 132 only 7 of them actually play in the nhl.
They chose their own numbers. When a new referee/linesman begins reffing the nhl, he gets to choose one that's not already taken. The referees have numbers from 2 to 49. The linesmen from 50 to 98. Number 1 and 99 are retired and cannot be chosen.
