You can never get rid of sin, or do something good enough to cover it up, but you can always have forgiveness. No matter what the sin, if you ask God to forgive because you know what you did was wrong, he will forgive you. So know God asks us to forgive others. - Dogluva21

A:Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) introduced the notion of original sin to the western half of the Christian Church, although it was never accepted in the Greek-speaking east and has been largely abandoned by many of the Protestant Churches. He said that original sin resulted directly from the disobedience of Adam and Eve, and believed that it could only be removed by baptism, so without baptism, souls could not go to heaven.

In more recent times, Christian Churches have modified their doctrine of original sin. Moreover, major denominations no longer regard Adam and Eve as literally the first two humans on earth, living just a few thousand years ago. Perhaps a little ahead of his Church's official position, Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without Adam and Eve, it will be hard to sustain the belief that Christians are born with original sin which can only be removed by baptism.

You cant get rid of sin. sin will always be there, but you can choose not to sin. First you have to identify the sin, know it is a sin. once you know the difference between whats a sin and whats not, it wont be easy not sinning but it will be easier than before.

The only way to really be rid of sin is to go to Heaven, because you can't get into Heaven with a human fleshly body (and mind). You have to have a heavenly body. And the only way to get that new body is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior -- because he died as a sacrifice for our sins, so that we could have eternal life. But, until then we have to take up our cross daily, and follow him.

Jesus said, "If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." (Luke 9:23) and "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." (John 14:6)

We "get rid of sin" by conforming ourselves ever more closely to Our Blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the only one who overcame sin and evil on His own, and it is only through Him, and with Him, that we can overcome sin in our lives, as we are literally born in sin, and are affected by it our entire lives.

The nuts and bolts of this involve becoming very close to Our Blessed Lord, invoking our Guardian Angel daily in our prayers, going to Mass, and receiving the Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord in Holy Communion, the very bread of Eternal Life which He left for us, and without which we cannot be saved. (John 6:53, actually, you need to read the entire sixth chapter of Saint John's Gospel to truly understand what an immense GIFT Our Blessed Lord has left for us in the Most Holy Eucharist), to do this we must attend Penance regularly (like a minimum of every two weeks, to confess our sins, and to start growing in divine life.)

Religion has never been successful in "getting rid of sin" and has probably not even succeeded in reducing the level of sin in the world. So, religion has had thousands of years to prove what it can do, and now is time for a new approach.

We should teach every child to behave ethically on a basis of personal responsibility, rather than on the basis of faith. In doing so, we need not offer a reward in some next life, nor threaten punishment for failure - just the satisfaction of knowing right from wrong and the achievement of being a good person. This may not "get rid of sin" entirely, but it does work and it is an approach worth trying on a society-wide basis.

An ethical upbringing does not mean that people should no longer go to church or believe in a God, just that they are no longer seen as necessary prerequisites to doing what is right.
