Best Answer

The speed of sound c depends on the temperature of air and not on the air pressure!
The humidity of air has some negligible effect on the speed of sound. The air pressure
and the density of air (air density) are proportional to each other at the same temperature.

Temperature, density, pressure, the medium's material and the relative velocity of the medium are all major considerations. Some others are variants or specific circumstances of these. In still air, temperature is the major factor.

It is an amazing fact that the speed of sound in air is a function of temperature only. Even very large pressure changes produce only very small changes in the speed of sound.

The speed of sound in air is determined by the air itself. It is not dependent upon the sound amplitude, frequency or wavelength.

Notice: The speed of sound changes with temperatureand

a little bit with humidity − but not with air pressure (atmospheric pressure).

The words "sound pressure at sea level" are incorrect and misleading.

The temperature indication, however, is absolutely necessary. The speed of sound at 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) is 343 metres per second. That is 1126.547 feet per second.

How does the pitch of a sound affect its speed?

Pitch of sound in air does not affect the speed of sound. The speed of sound in air is also not affected by atmospheric pressure.Temperature does affect the speed of sound in air.Similar statements are not true for liquids or solids. It stops being true for gasses when pressure and temperature are near the point that the gas will liquify.
