most wax for today's candles come from paraffin, a by-product of oil distillation. it is usually a solid at room (60-80 degrees) temperature, but has a melting point that starts around 99 degrees, but becomes fully liquid between 115-140 degrees!!

bees, also, produce an all natural wax when making the combs for their queen's eggs and to hold the royal jelly needed to feed those eggs and it is created from pollen!!

other sources of wax are stearin which is created from palm wax, gel wax which is made out of resins and some mineral oil!! there are plant waxes as a by-product of soybean, carnauba, and palm nuts (meat)!!

also, tallow, a fat-rendered product from animals is not frequently used today because of its cost and is similar to the wax that was created from whale blubber which in the 1700-1800's nearly decimated all whale species!!
