A roping saddle is a type of western saddle. A good roping saddle is sturdy, has a thicker horn for securing a rope, a low cantle, and a slick fork that allows rider to dismount quickly. A quality roping saddle has a deep seat and horns and trees that are extra strong to take the force of the pull. Generally suede padded seats are preferred to get a better grip. The swells of the saddle are kept reasonably low so that the leverage of the rope on the horn is minimal.

A roping saddle is designed to enable the rider with maximum freedom in order to easily move to rope a calf or steer. It has a low back to allow for a quick dismount, a deep seat, and a solid horn and tree to support and allow dallying off the rope after roping the steer or calf.

A cutting saddle is designed to enable the rider to stay on his horse. Cutting horses do the work, the rider just rides. The saddle has a shallow seat to help center the rider over the horse, with a tall horn to give the rider something to hold onto.

Anything sturdy and athletic, but to name a few...

Quarter Horses

Paints

Appaloosas

There are also other horse breeds that would be fine. It depends on the horse and its abilities, not so much its breed.

Typically a regular show saddle will be used. This type of saddle is typically seen on western pleasure horses, horsemanship horses, and arena trail horses. At lower levels you could probably use a plain, but well kept training saddle.
