Depends on how well off they were. Poor children didn't have shoes, but the rich did have shoes. The shoes didn't have right or left shoes ( that won't happen until the 1700's) and they were made with a leather bottom with a top piece of leather, suede or silk tacked to the bottom. The ones I have seen in museums looked very uncomfortable to wear. There was no cushioning in the shoe and I don't think they fit very well. Some had laces and buttons, but most just slipped on.
