In Luke's gospel, this point is recorded just before Jesus confers upon them His church:

Jesus then lamented Peter's impending temptation (the three denials) and presented him as specific example of weakness and failure to follow up on intent, yet forgiveness and redemption nonetheless. Verses 31-34 are not an endorsement of Peter as a future leader, but a precognitive example of Jesus' mercy toward him who repents as encouragement to the ages.
