Nicholas Copernicus 1473-1543 was a Polish priest and astronomer who created an alternative model of the planets which put the Sun at the centre, instead of the Earth as generally accepted at that time.
He knew it would get him into trouble with the church, and his book 'De Revolutionibus' was not published until the year he died. The theory with the Sun at the centre was similar to the old Ptolemaic system with its collection of circles and epicycles allowing for the changes in distance and the changes in planets' speeds, and their departure from the ecliptic.
From watching the sky, Copernicus learned that the universe was Heliocentric, (meaning: centered around the sun.)
Easy, he used his innate ability to research and use the scientific method to discover insightful things about the universe. Also, the world is flat.
It did not help the universe at all but it did help us in the continuing efforts to understand the universe.
Nicolaus Copernicus found out what happens with the Earth's movements.
Copernicus was worried that his mathematical model of the solar system went against christianity, as he was a devout christian. It is for this reason that he did not publish his model until he was on his deathbed, and is partially the reason for Galileo being placed under house arrest. Copernicus was so worried about this that in several parts of his paper, he reconciled his theory with the views of the church.
Copernicus hypothesized (discovered) that the Sun is the center of the universe and that the Earth isn't. (Actually the Sun is not the center of the Universe but it its the center of our solar system). At that time the church thought that the Earth was the center of the universe and they thought that they were right all the time and Nicolas Copernicus proved them wrong and they got angry at him for doing that because a lot of people didn't trust the church any more.
The theory was published in a famous book entitled (in Latin): 'De revolutionibus orbium coelestium', which means, 'On the revolutions of the orbs of the heavens'.

it helped all sorts of things from astronauts nasa and other astronomers find out more about the universe.and now that we know that the sun is the center we can proceed in figuring out the solar system.
He was the first astromoner to formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology which displaced the earth from the center of the universe.
Everyone just knew that the world was flat... If that was wrong, what else could be wrong...
It did not help the universe at all but it did help us in the continuing efforts to understand the universe.

Kepler and Copernicus found solar system and said that earth revolves around the sun.
