The Assyro-Babylonian religion (religion of the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires) was a polytheistic belief.

The following is a list of some Assyrian deities:

  • Assur / Anshar, patron of Assur
  • Ishtar, the goddess of love and war, patroness of Nineveh
  • Adramelech
  • As Shalla, the Assyrian goddess of grain
  • Anasas, god of medicine
  • Nishraeli
  • Nisroch, god of agriculture
  • Nimrod
  • Oannes
  • Nabu
  • Samnuha
  • Kubaba
  • Marduk
  • Ellil
  • Anu
  • Ea, Sumerian Enki
  • Kishar
  • Sin/Suen, sumerian Nanna
  • Ishara
  • Shamash

Those who practiced this religion were called Ashurists practicing Ashurism. Named after the lead god, Assur.

After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Eshou M'shekha in Assyrian), St. Thomas (Mar Toma in Assyrian) founded the Assyrian Church of the East. Ever since then, Assyrians have been Christians.

The pre-Christian religion of the Assyrian empire (sometimes called Ashurism) centred around the Assur, patron god of the city of Assur, besides Ishtar patroness of the city of Niniveh. The god, Ashur, the patron god of Ashur from the Late Bronze Age was in constant rivalry with the patron deity of Marduk. In Assyria, Ashur eventually superceded Marduk in his role as husband of Ishtar.

A:The ancient Assyrians practised a polytheistic religion not unlike the religion we now know the Israelites practised, but they did not interfere in the religious beliefs of the conquered peoples. The Assyrian imperial god was Ashur. They worshipped the sun god, moon god and other gods and goddesses known to the Israelites, but under Assyrian names. The major difference between the religion of Israel and that of Assyria was that Yahweh (YHWH) was unknown to the Assyrians but had become the chief God of Israel.

The Assyrians inherited many of the same gods that feature in other Mesopotamian pantheons. As for national or patriotic beliefs, they believed that they had the right to conquer and subjugate all Non-Assyrian people.
