Before the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948, the land was the British Mandate of Palestine. The United Nations had decided to split Palestine into four zones, with two zones going to the Jews and two zones to the Palestinians, providing approximately half of the former Palestine to each. The Palestinian share was gradually reduced, until the UN defined a "Green Line", providing the Palestinians somewhat more than the 1967 borders.
Between the early 1920 and 14 May 1948 - Israel was under the British Mandate for Palestine
The UN vote 29 Nov 1947 partitioned the mandate into a Jewish and Arab part and scheduled the end of the British Mandate for May 1948
In practice the partition plan was rejected by the Arabs and the borders were determined as a result of the resulting War of Independence that started on (& before) the end of the British Mandate.
It was originally called Canaan. Then it became the Kingdoms of Israel and Judea. After the year 70, the Romans renamed it Palestine after the Philistines. There were several governates, Crusader States and Ottoman as various vilayets or provinces. These never encompassed the entire area. The British Mandate of Palestine was established in 1919, had its territory defined by the modern boundaries in 1922 and remained in effect until 1948.
The territory was administered by the British as the British Mandate for Palestine or Mandatory Palestine from 1919-1948.
It is worth noting that there was no "agreement" in 1947, but there was a United Nations General Assembly Resolution passed on November 30, 1947 concerning the partitioning of the British Mandate for Palestine into a Jewish State and an Arab State (UNGA Resolution 181 (II)).
The same thing it is now, someone else's country.
It was Palestine, a small country mainly populated by Arabs, with some Jews and Christians. It was run by the British as part of the British Empire. They called it The Palestine Mandate.
Prior to 1948, Israel was a part of the BRITISH MANDATE FOR PALESTINE.
Israel's old name was Canaan
None; there was no "Palestine" prior to World War 1. Before the Great War, the area now sometimes called "Palestine" was part of Turkey, and had been for hundreds of years. Turkey was allied with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and after WWI ended, the British and French partitioned Turkey into several separate colonies including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. "Palestine" was the name given to the area that now includes Israel and Jordan. After WWII, the United Nations partitioned "Palestine" into "Israel" and "Trans-Jordan", or the "land across the Jordan River".
