What was segregation?
Segregation was the state and national law of separating "coloured" people from white people. Those who were oppressed often had much worse facilities, could not visit better establishments of any kind and were not permitted certain rights that others were.

Growing up in the sixties was odd - I remember the doctor's office had a separate waiting room for blacks and I thought that was the weirdest thing. My black friends had to si…t in the balcony if we went to a movie together, and we white kids sat downstairs (I wanted to sit upstairs with them). I don't remember my town having stuff like separate water fountains, but they did exist.
The solution to segregation was to pass laws that madede-segregation mandatory. The laws banned any separations on theground of race in public facilities.
