Gettysburg is the better known battle, and it was decisive primarily because it ended the South's best chance to take Washington and end the war before the North's industry could grind it down. From that point on, the South was on the defensive instead of the offensive.
The taking of Vicksburg by the North gave them control of the Mississippi, and effectively cut the South in two, worsening their weakness in material, money, and men.
