There are different opinions about what was the first comic book because of differing opinions on what is a comic book. Many will give credit to the G. W. Dillingham Company, who in 1897 published a book of reprints of Richard F. Outcault "Yellow Kid" comic strips. The publication was titled The Yellow Kid in McFadden's Flats. It was later published in the United States, in 1842, 55 years before the Yellow Kid comic book was published. Please see Related Links for more on the Rodolphe Topffer and his comic books.
