The law mentioned in Galatians, for example:

Galatians 2:16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

is the Mosaic Law, given by God to the nation of Israel.

During his early missionary journeys, the Apostle Paul visited Asia Minor, preaching the gospel message that salvation is by faith in Christ alone. Many of his hearers were saved, and churches were formed, several of them in Galatia.

After Paul had left this area, false teachers entered the churches and introduced wrong doctrine. They taught that salvation was by faith in Christ plus keeping the law. Their message was a mixture of Christianity and Judaism, of grace and law, of Christ and Moses.

The book of Galatians was written to teach against the false teachers. Paul sets forth the true character of salvation as being given by grace from beginning to end, not earned by law-keeping either in whole or in part. Good works are not a condition of salvation, but a fruit of it. The Christian has died to the law; he leads a life of holiness, not by his own efforts, but by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit of God.

Another View:

The same Law Jesus and His Apostles followed - the Law of God amended as necessary after Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection. Paul was concerned with the Galatians falling back upon their old pagan ways and the Gnostic, as well as Jewish pressures of circumcision being placed upon the new Christians.

Probably the most frequently 'misused' passage is Galatians 3:10-13:

Galatians 3:10-13New King James Version (NKJV)

The Law Brings a Curse

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."[a]11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."[b]12 Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them."[c]

13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed iseveryone who hangs on a tree"[d]),

Footnotes:
  1. Galatians 3:10 Deuteronomy 27:26
  2. Galatians 3:11 Habakkuk 2:4
  3. Galatians 3:12 Leviticus 18:5
  4. Galatians 3:13 Deuteronomy 21:23

Most assume Paul was viewing God's Law as a curse. But this doesn't reconcile with what he says in Romans 7:12, that God's Law was holy. So we see that Paul was stating that there is a curse 'decreed' by the Law and not the Law itself being a curse.

All the writers of the New Testament are in harmony when each says that 'no works' of any kind can earn for anyone the remission of sins or the gift of the Holy Spirit - which is conditioned upon repentance and faith - each of which are gifts of mercy as a result of Christ's sacrifice for all of us. And He says to the Galatians: "You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified! The only thing I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing works of the law or by believing what you heard? Are you foolish? Having started with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh (circumcision for example)? Galatians 3:1-2, New Revised Standard Version.

The issue Paul was making was to tell the Galatians not to wonder if the Law of God is good or bad, but whether keeping the law can earn forgiveness of sin and eternal life - the answer was an NO. Paul's point was the works of the Law earn nothing is regards to justification. And the very idea that one can earn personal forgiveness and salvation was absurd. The Law only defines sin and sets the penalty of it. But no law can forgive sin - you can't buy back or earn forgiveness once we sin:

Romans 3:20New King James Version (NKJV)

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

So, is the Law no longer in effect? No, the new Christian establishes the Law as Jesus has done:

Romans 3:27-31New King James Version (NKJV)

Boasting Excluded

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

What is the theme of ephesians?

Paul was correcting wrong thinking that had quickly developed in the congregations of Galatia(Galatians 1:6). Certain Jews were trying to teach that circumcision (and other facets of the Law) were still required among Christians and Paul was reprimanding congregation members for being influenced by their false teachings(Galatians 2:15-3:14; 4:9+10) These ' false brothers', called 'Judaizers', were sly and concerned with their own interests (Acts 15:1/Galatians 2:4). Pretending to represent the congregation in Jerusalem, they discredited Paul and wanted the Christians to get circumcised(Galatians 4:17), to try and stop Jewish persecution of Christians. Paul wrote to the Galatians to remind them that they were no longer under the Mosaic Law(Galatians 2:15-21)(Galatians 1:6-9/Galatians 5:1-12/Galatians 6:12-16), but that they were acceptable to God because of their FAITH in the good news about Jesus (Galatians 3:1-5)(Galatians 4:1-7), and that the 'true sons of Abraham' were those with FAITH like Abraham's (Galatians 3:6-9+26-29).

How does paul justify that christians need not follow torah and explain the argument from Galatians that appeals to the crucifixion of jesus cite some of the biblical texts that paul uses?

The torah, or the law is the strength of sin (1Corinthians 15.56), so following the demands of the law (torah) will simply make us greater sinners. But Jesus Christ alone can take away sin. The Galatian Christians, Paul calls foolish, as they were following the wrong doctrine that said a man is made perfect by the law after believing in Christ and him crucified. But Paul said about the law: For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. (Galatians 2.19) and, I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness [come] by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (Galatians 2.21)

Where is Galatians in The Bible?
