1st Answer:

there wasnt any punishment for beating your wife. feminists didnt exist back then.

2nd Answer:

There was huge variation in results of bad action towards women. Early on, the laws were Roman and Germanic, and Roman law was often harsher toward women. Later, the idea of the Code of Chivalry became important, and proper respect of women became an important part of the culture, perhaps to the point of overemphasis.

The punishment for spousal abuse depended on what country you were in. In some places, there was no punishment. In other places, there was no formal punishment, but the society a person lived in would not abide abuse and an abuser was ostracised. In still other places, humiliating treatment was prescribed, such as having to wear a mask made from the face of a pig for a period of time. And in other places, the abuse could be met with a fine or other punishment.

The punishments given prescribed for hurting or killing a woman were not always the same as those for hurting or killing a man. There was, for example, a concept called weregild in the Early Middle Ages, which was a fine paid to the family of a person killed. In some countries, weregild for a woman was half that of a man, but in others it was double. The punishment for rape was often the same as the punishment for murder. And in some places, there were punishments for humiliating a woman for exposing a covered part of her body - lifting the hem of a dress could get you a stiff fine, but the fine for lifting hat or hood to expose her hair was less.

It was an awful device called a scolds brace. This was a metal and leather thing that fit over the mouth and was fixed in the back. It held the tongue down as well. Many times this was put on and then she was also put in a device that would dunk her in a lake or river a few times.
