The Rolling Stones played their first gig on 12 July 1962 in the Marquee Club in London with the following line-up:

Brian Jones (Guitar)
Mick Jagger (Vocals, Harmonica)
Keith Richards (Rhythm Guitar)
Dick Taylor (Bass)
Tony Chapman (Drums)
Ian Stewart (Piano)

The band was founded by Brian Jones. He placed an ad and Ian Stewart was the first to answer it. Jagger, Richards and Taylor had already been playing together in their own amateur band.

Dick Taylor left in November to return to art school and was replaced by Bill Wyman. After playing with a couple different drummers, the band invited Charlie Watts to join the group in January 1963. This was basically the line-up for the next six years:

Brian Jones (Guitar)
Mick Jagger (Vocals, Harmonica)
Keith Richards (Rhythm Guitar)
Ian Stewart (Piano) *
Bill Wyman (Bass)
Charlie Watts (Drums)

* Basically, because in May 1963, Ian Stewart was demoted from being a member of the band in May 1963 but he remained as road manager and keyboardist until his death in 1985. He would play with them, but wasn't acknowledged as a member of the band. The Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham had felt that six was too many members and that Stewart didn't fit the "look" of the band. Nonetheless, Stewart contributed piano, organ, marimbas and/or percussion to all Rolling Stones albums released between 1964 and 1983, except for Beggars Banquet.

This line-up of Jagger, Jones, Richards, Watts, and Wyman (with Stewart as a non-member) remained in place until Brian Jones's death in July, 1969. Jones's replacement was Mick Taylor, who in turn was replaced by Ronnie Wood in 1975.

Ian Stewart died in 1985.
Bill Wyman left the band in 1992.
Darryl Jones has worked as a bassist for the band since 1994 but is not an official band member.
