alchemy was used for many things including healing and future sight. one of the main things alchemy was used for is so the so called user of alchemy refered to as an "alchemist" could obtain a philosophers stone. a philosophers stone is a small, round alchemy component used so the alchemist could convert base metals and alloys into gold, travel the the underworld, gain divine powers, and even become immortal( having invulnerability & ever-lasting life). alchemy is based on transmusion and requires base elements & minerals (sulfer, amonia, Mercury, etc.).

Before, Greeks were the first person to study the behavior of matter. They were actually called armchair scientistsbecause all they do was observe. They were on debates with the data collected from observing. But when the Europeans came, they introduced alchemy and the people who studies alchemy are called Alchemists.
The alchemists were not just about observing and they were the ones who started experimenting. Because of them, CHEMISTRYis now a branch of Physical Science.
Alchemists also introduce the philospher's stone (a stone that can make you immortal), elixir of life and the alchemists were the ones who introduced converting cheap metal to gold.
