Genesis 9:9-15 says that God made the rainbow as a sign for the covenant that he would not again flood the whole earth. Science tells us that the rainbow was always there, as long as there were clouds to refract light, but for the ancients this was a sure sign from God.

A:Genesis 9:12-15 says that God placed a rainbow in the clouds, as a sign of his covenant never to destroy life again with another flood. This made sense until only a few centuries ago, when scientists realised that the laws of physics mean that the rainbow has always existed as long as there were clouds and rain.
